Whole Grain Porridge for breakfast has a multitude of health benefits that may lead to a long, healthy life. Recently, a Harvard University study found that a diet rich in whole grains can substantially reduce the chances of heart disease and extend life. These findings remained the same for all, healthy and unhealthy. This study suggests that if the population switched from meat to whole grains as their staple food, thousands of lives could be saved each year.
Many families struggle with breakfast, not finding the time to cook a nutritious meal in the early morning as everyone rushes to get ready for the day. An easy solution is to prepare your morning porridge the night before. Take any leftover grain from Dinner and place in a pot with water and just a pinch of salt. Stir, bring to a boil and gently simmer (covered). I like to do this while I am doing the Dinner dishes. When I awaken in the Morning, I add a bit more water, stir and heat. The Porridge should be soft and creamy. I like to add roasted nuts, seeds as a topping. Millet, Rice, Whole Oats, Barley and Buckwheat make great breakfast Porridge.
